IST Istanbul Airport
Layover in Istanbul: what fits in your hours
Istanbul Airport is far from the old town, so an Istanbul layover is a trade: about an hour and a quarter each way by metro, for some of the most famous sights in the world within a few hundred metres of each other in Sultanahmet. With less than eight hours, it rarely pays off on your own; look at the free Touristanbul tour if you fly Turkish Airlines.
How much time you really get
We count 75 minutes each way on the M11 metro to Gayrettepe, M2 metro to Vezneciler, short walk to Sultanahmet, plus 20% for waiting, 45 minutes from landing to the exit, and 120 minutes back at the airport before departure. Bags checked through.

Plan with your own flight times and passport
Can you leave the airport?
Leaving the airport means entering Türkiye. Of the 14 passports we cover, India, Mexico, South Africa and Philippines need an e-visa applied for before the trip; the others can go without one. Rules for every passport, with official sources →
Two hours: the Sultanahmet square
Layover of 8 h or more
Everything is on foot around Sultanahmet Square.
- Hagia Sophia. The 6th-century church turned mosque. Even from the square it is the reason most people come; inside, visitors follow a separate route.
- Sultan Ahmed (Blue) Mosque. Across the park. Open to visitors outside prayer times; shoulders and knees covered, women cover their hair (scarves at the entrance).
- Hippodrome. The old Byzantine racecourse next to the mosque, with an Egyptian obelisk three and a half thousand years old.
Four hours: add the palace or the bazaar
Layover of 10 h or more
From Sultanahmet, Topkapı is a 10-minute walk; the Grand Bazaar 15 minutes along the tram line.
- Basilica Cistern. The underground Byzantine water cistern with its forest of columns, steps from the square. Queues can be long; buy the ticket online.
- Topkapı Palace. The Ottoman sultans’ palace above the Bosphorus. Give it at least two hours; it closes one day a week.
- Grand Bazaar. The covered market, an alternative to the palace if you would rather walk than queue. Closed on Sundays.
Seven hours: down to the water
Layover of 13 h or more
Grand Bazaar → downhill to Eminönü → over the Galata Bridge or onto a ferry.
- Spice Bazaar and Eminönü. Walk down through the shopping streets to the spice market and the ferry piers on the Golden Horn.
- A public ferry to Asia. The city ferries from Eminönü to Kadıköy or Üsküdar cross the Bosphorus in about 20 minutes and are the cheapest cruise in town; pay with an Istanbulkart.
- Galata Bridge and Tower. Cross the bridge with the fishermen to Karaköy and walk up to the Galata Tower for the view over the old town.
Good to know
- Buy an Istanbulkart (the city transport card) at the metro station: one card works on the metro, tram and ferries.

- Turkish Airlines’ free Touristanbul tour takes eligible passengers with 6–24 hour connections into town, with the transport sorted: see the airport page for the conditions.
Free transit tour: Touristanbul (Turkish Airlines): free guided city tour for international-to-international Turkish Airlines connections of 6-24 h; ticket number starting 235, both flights on one PNR; tours 08:00-11:30, 08:30-15:00, 16:00-21:30 (updated 1 May 2026); report to the desk 30 min before start (allow ~45 min from gate incl. passport control); at least 1 h 25 min between tour end and next flight.
