Layover in Dubai: what fits in your hours

From Dubai International, the Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3 straight to the Burj Khalifa in about half an hour, which makes Dubai one of the few hubs where even a six-hour layover can reach the city. The catch: the metro starts late on Sundays, allows only two bags, and Terminal 2 has no station.

How much time you really get

We count 30 minutes each way on the Dubai Metro Red Line from Airport Terminal 1 or 3 to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, plus 20% for waiting, 45 minutes from landing to the exit, and 120 minutes back at the airport before departure. Bags checked through.

Can you leave the airport?

Leaving the airport means entering the United Arab Emirates. Of the 14 passports we cover, South Africa and Philippines need a visa; the others can go without one, some with a visa on arrival. Rules for every passport, with official sources →

Two hours: Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall

Layover of 6 h 30 min or more

Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, then the covered walkway into the mall.

  1. Burj Khalifa observation deck. The tallest building in the world. Book a timed ticket in advance; sunset slots sell out first.
  2. Dubai Fountain. The fountain show on the lake at the foot of the tower runs regularly in the evening and is free to watch from the promenade.
  3. Dubai Mall. Air-conditioned, with the aquarium visible from the ground floor: the place to spend the hottest hours.

Four hours: Old Dubai and the creek

Layover of 8 h 30 min or more

Red Line to BurJuman, change to the Green Line for Al Ghubaiba, walk to the creek.

  1. Al Fahidi historical district. Wind-tower houses and narrow lanes from before the oil boom, now galleries and small museums.
  2. Abra across Dubai Creek. The wooden water taxis cross the creek in a few minutes for a small fare, the oldest public transport in the city.
  3. Gold and spice souks. On the Deira side, right where the abra lands.

Seven hours: the coast

Layover of 11 h 30 min or more

Red Line south towards the Marina, or a taxi along the coast.

  1. Dubai Marina and JBR beach. The waterfront walk below the towers and a public beach, by metro and tram.
  2. Burj Al Arab view. Best seen from the public beach next to it; the hotel itself is guests-only.

Good to know

  • Buy a Nol card at the metro station; the metro has a Gold Class carriage and women-and-children carriages, marked on the platform.
  • On Sundays the metro starts at 08:00, so an early-morning Sunday layover needs a taxi.
  • Check your terminal: the metro stops at T1 and T3 only, and a few airlines use Dubai World Central, 60 km away.

Opening hours and ticket prices change: check them on Visit Dubai (official tourism site) before you go.
