Layover in Doha: what fits in your hours

Doha is one of the easiest layover cities in the world: the metro leaves from the terminal and reaches the old market in about 25 minutes, the airport is a single terminal, and most of the sights are along one waterfront. The thing to plan around is the heat: from May to September, keep the middle of the day for indoor stops.

How much time you really get

We count 25 minutes each way on the Doha Metro Red Line from Hamad International Airport (T1) to Msheireb, plus 20% for waiting, 45 minutes from landing to the exit, and 120 minutes back at the airport before departure. Bags checked through.

Two hours: Souq Waqif

Layover of 6 h or more

Red Line to Msheireb, then a 5-minute walk.

  1. Souq Waqif. The rebuilt old market: spice and textile alleys, falcon shops and cafés. Lively in the evening, quiet in the midday heat.
  2. Corniche. The waterfront promenade across the road from the souq, with the West Bay towers on the other side of the bay.

Four hours: the Museum of Islamic Art

Layover of 8 h or more

From Souq Waqif, walk 15–20 minutes along the Corniche, or take a taxi in summer.

  1. Museum of Islamic Art. I. M. Pei’s building on its own island, with one of the great collections of Islamic art. Check the opening hours, which change on Fridays.
  2. MIA Park. Next to the museum, with the best view of the West Bay skyline across the water.
  3. Msheireb Downtown. The new quarter by the metro station, with the small Msheireb Museums in restored heritage houses.

Seven hours: the National Museum and Katara

Layover of 11 h or more

Metro to National Museum station, then north to Katara station.

  1. National Museum of Qatar. Jean Nouvel’s “desert rose” building, with the story of the country from the pearl divers to oil. It has its own metro station.
  2. Katara Cultural Village. Amphitheatre, mosques and a public beach on the bay, a 20-minute metro ride north.

Good to know

  • Card payments work almost everywhere, including the metro ticket machines.
  • Dress modestly in the souq and in government buildings: shoulders and knees covered.
  • Discover Qatar (Qatar Airways group) sells paid transit tours from a desk in the transit area, if you would rather not go alone.

Opening hours and ticket prices change: check them on Visit Qatar (official tourism site) before you go.
