HKG Hong Kong International Airport

Layover in Hong Kong: what fits in your hours

Hong Kong is one of the easiest layover cities in the world: the Airport Express reaches Central in under half an hour, most passports enter without a visa, and the airport runs its own free layover tours for long connections. Harbour views, the Peak and the old streets of Central are all close to the station.

How much time you really get

We count 24 minutes each way on the MTR Airport Express to Hong Kong Station (Central), plus 20% for waiting, 45 minutes from landing to the exit, and 120 minutes back at the airport before departure. Bags checked through.

Two hours: Central and the Star Ferry

Layover of 6 h or more

From Hong Kong Station walk to Central Pier; the ferry crosses to Tsim Sha Tsui and back.

  1. Star Ferry. The green-and-white ferries have crossed Victoria Harbour for over a century; the ten-minute ride is the cheapest view of the skyline.
  2. Tsim Sha Tsui promenade. The Kowloon waterfront with the Clock Tower and the Avenue of Stars, facing the Hong Kong Island skyline.
  3. Central. Back across the harbour, walk the streets between the towers to Statue Square and the old Legislative Council building.

Four hours: Victoria Peak and old Central

Layover of 8 h or more

Walk to the Peak Tram terminus on Garden Road; come down and walk the Mid-Levels back to the station.

  1. Victoria Peak. The Peak Tram climbs the steep hillside to the classic view over the harbour. Queues can be long at weekends; the bus is the backup.
  2. Mid-Levels Escalator. The long chain of outdoor escalators through the hillside neighbourhoods, past Soho’s cafés.
  3. Man Mo Temple and Hollywood Road. An incense-filled 19th-century temple among antique shops and galleries.

Seven hours: Kowloon markets and the harbour

Layover of 11 h or more

Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui, MTR north to Mong Kok, back by MTR to Kowloon Station for the Airport Express.

  1. Tsim Sha Tsui. The promenade and Nathan Road, Kowloon’s busiest street.
  2. Mong Kok markets. The Ladies’ Market, the goldfish and flower markets and the bird garden, a few streets apart.
  3. Temple Street Night Market. Street food and stalls in Yau Ma Tei from the evening, one MTR stop back towards the harbour.
